Thank you for volunteering at the first annual Community & Campus Day of Service! We delivered 81,044 meals to the Eastern Illinois Foodbank on Monday, April 22, and they were thrilled. These meals will help to feed the 20% of the local community population that uses the local foodbank (25% of local children). We will be packaging the rest of the meals with the leftover ingredients at some point in the next few months and delivering them to the foodbank as well – so we will fulfill our goal of 146,000 meals.

Leveraging LinkedIn To Build Your Brand

Here are a few tips on how to get started building or updating your LinkedIn profile:

Create a complete profile. Add a picture (professional, of course) and fill out your profile in its entirety. List leadership positions that you’ve held with student organizations and make sure to include bullet points on skills sets acquired and work completed for jobs you’ve held. Spend time on your summary – should be only about a paragraph in first person. Be genuine and think of it as a personal statement. What do you want a potential employer to know about you?
Keep your profile updated. Treat your profile just as you would your resume. Your profile captures your online presence, samples of your work, recommendations from former employers and colleagues. If you update your resume, you should also update your LI profile.
Join (and participate in) Groups. LinkedIn has a wide variety of professional interest groups. Find what interests you. There are local groups, groups for jobseekers, and groups on social media, just to name a few. This is also a great way to stay up to date on industry information and network with professionals in careers you admire.
Connect with others in the industry. Seek out others who are professionals in your industry or in an industry you’re interested in. Reach and connect with them. Send a quick InMail to explain why you’re interested in connecting and don’t forget to include an ACTION item! Maybe you’re looking for advice on how to get started in the industry or even advice on their experience with a specific company – don’t be afraid to ask questions!
Search for job opportunities. There are several ways to search for opportunities using LinkedIn. You can use the Jobs tab to search for opportunities and narrow your search by a variety of criteria including location, experience level, etc. Additionally, most groups have a Jobs tab where companies post roles that are directly related to that specific group. You can also “follow” companies on LinkedIn and view more information regarding work culture, and career opportunities from those companies you most admire.
Request Recommendations. A great way to highlight your past work is to request recommendations on projects you have worked on through a past employer. If your past employer is not on LinkedIn, you can request recommendations from Project Managers in organizations you’ve worked in, and even professors that you’ve worked with. When requesting recommendations, think of asking someone to highlight a specific skill set: project management, analytic ability, leadership skills, developing client relationships, etc.

Leveraging Social Media in Your Job Search

What is a social media “presence” and how do you build yours effectively to utilize in your internship and full-time job search?

A social media presence is your digital brand that communicates to others externally about your personality, your qualifications, even your likes and dislikes. Most of us already have a social media presence due to Facebook and Twitter – where we share personal information via the internet to our closest friends and family. Your personality comes out through the groups you’re a member of, companies that you “Like” or “Follow”, and even your status updates communicating your daily experiences.

You may want to keep your personal social media presence separate from the workplace. Professional social media can be used to build out your brand professionally to catch the eye of potential employers, as well as allow you to learn more information about opportunities available at different companies. LinkedIn is a social media networking site with over 175 million users globally. Through this site, potential candidates can list their qualifications and past job experiences, much like a digital resume.

Through LinkedIn, I recommend building out your profile until you reach 100% completion. Don’t have enough material to complete your profile? Not to worry! Keep working on your industry experience and qualifications and eventually, you will get there.

The next step is to build your army! Once you have a profile that sufficiently reflects your past experiences, start searching for connections that you may know. That can include past or current employers, professors, and even classmates. These are people that you know and have worked with (i.e. professionally or on a class project), or that you’re interested in further networking with (i.e. friends, an industry professional that you admire). You should also decide beforehand if you’re interested in accepting connections with only people you know. By accepting people that you do not know, it could open up your circle of contacts more and provide you with an industry contact that could help you get in touch with someone that you’re interested in knowing better.

After you have built your army, start thinking about asking for endorsements via LinkedIn. Endorsements are a great tool to receive recommendations on your quality of work from those you have reported to, services you may have provided to clients (maybe you built an amazing website for a friend), and even classmates that you’ve worked on projects with. By asking for endorsements from people that you know, you can show potential employers that not only do you output great work but that the people you have worked with value your contributions.

Lastly, begin to leverage groups as a great resource for networking and potential job opportunities.

You can join groups specific to your industry of choice, companies that interest you, and even topics that you may enjoy (i.e. finance, digital marketing, C# experts, Adobe Photoshop ). Some companies (including Walgreens) have groups that are specifically targeted to providing company and job/internship information to students, as well as provide a way for students to contact recruiters directly for more information. This is especially important if you’re really interested in a company that may not recruit on-campus at your school, or that you are looking to connect with more. Last summer I was able to connect with a Marketing student via LinkedIn, who was interested in our corporate internship program. The student noticed my internship posting and sent me an InMail message to inquire further about qualifications. I directed her to apply online and then set up a phone call to discuss further and the rest was history!

If you’re ready to jump into your digital job search, I’d recommend starting with LinkedIn and really focusing on building out your profile successfully. It’s a great starting point and allows you to passively learn about your industry of choice and potential employers.

If you’re still not ready, think about using Twitter. Many companies have career specific Twitter handles that you can follow and learn more about what type of opportunities they have. Just be mindful that they might decide to follow YOU, and can then read your tweets!

The Asia Investment Banking Conference (AIBC) Organising Committee is delighted to present you with the exclusive opportunity to participate in the Asia Investment Banking Conference 2013.

Initiated by the students of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in 2009, the AIBC has three objectives: (i) to promote a deeper understanding of the Corporate Advisory and Financial Markets in Asia among students; (ii) to facilitate a forum for senior professionals to share their views on the industry outlook; and (iii) to provide networking opportunities via interaction with the most accomplished finance professionals.

Past AIBCs was successful in achieving the goals set by the organisers and remains the largest student organised and most prominent event in Asia focused on Corporate Advisory and Financial Markets. Close to 50 senior professionals from leading financial services institutions and 350 students from more than 50 premier universities globally took part in the 2-day event.

As a delegate, you will have the privileged opportunity to gain insights into the current and future developments of the financial services industry in Asia through keynote speeches, panel discussions and interactive workshops. In addition to that, participants will have the exclusive opportunity to meet and network with speakers as well as like-minded peers from around the world.

The AIBC 2013 is scheduled to take place over two days, on 5-6 September 2013, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Hong Kong.

On April 17^th Deloitte & Alpha Kappa Psi are sponsoring a ‘dance-a-thon’ to raise money for charity. We are looking for your help by forming Deloitte teams to represent the firm and promote our brand at the event!

Deloitte Dance Teams

Team up with your fellow Deloitte Illini to participate in the dance-a-thon! This is an opportunity to reconnect with your student colleagues and show off your Deloitte spirit! Dressing up in “Deloitte gear” is encouraged, have fun with it! Each Deloitte team must have four members.

Event Details

Each team of four must pay a $20 entry-fee (cash only). The team who dances the most consecutive minutes from 5:30 – 7:30 pm will be crowned champions. The team will win a prize – and all the money raised will go to charity! The New Student Programs office is looking for students who want to help incoming Illini's and beef up their resume with volunteer hours! Welcome Days Leader is a great position for anyone looking to develop great networking opportunities and leadership skills. We're looking for anyone interested in help new Illinois students adjust to campus!

The only requirements for this position are:
* 2.5 cumulative GPA
* 1 University professional recommendation
* Attendance at one of three trainings (April 11, 20, 25)
* A student at UIUC this semester and next semester

What is a Welcome Days Leader (WDL)?

Am I qualified?

To be a WDL you must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5, have one university professional recommendation (we’ll send it to them, don’t worry) , be able to attend one of our three trainings (April 11, 20 or 25), and be a student on the main campus this semester and fall semester. Also, you must be able to get back to campus by August 18.

Why should I do this?

Not only is this a great resume builder, but you will directly be influencing the transition of new Illini to campus. This is your opportunity to be a mentor, learn more about campus, get some free Illini clothes, learn basic leadership skills and get back on campus early without those pesky classes getting in the way.
